NOTE:
We wont be sending pings around to check connectivity. ... BGP is not like that, we will be checking the BGP routing table (BGP is slightly different that the routes will be in the BGP table, not in the IP routing table)  - however you can redistribute them into your IGP table (ospf/eigrp etc)
